Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before getting started. If your question isn't here, feel free to get in touch.
Recovery coaching is a confidential, one-to-one relationship focused on your recovery goals. It combines practical, forward-looking support with genuine emotional care, helping you build the skills, strategies, and confidence to change your relationship with alcohol, drugs, or behavioural addictions. Unlike therapy, it's action-oriented, focused on where you want to go and how to get there, while also giving you a safe space to process how you're feeling along the way.
No. Therapy typically explores the root causes of addiction and diagnoses mental health conditions. Recovery coaching is action-oriented and forward-looking. I focus on building practical skills, routines, and coping strategies to support your recovery, while also providing the emotional support you need to stay grounded. Many people benefit from both simultaneously. They're complementary, not competing.
No. You don't need to be sober or have already decided to stop. Recovery coaching works at any stage, whether you're still weighing up whether to make a change, in early recovery, or further along and feeling stuck. If something feels like it needs to shift, that's enough.
Sometimes. I only work with 2–3 premium clients at a time. If I'm full, you can still apply, typical wait time is around 2–3 weeks. I will let you know straight away.
Check-ins are quick touchpoints to help you stay steady in the moments that matter, managing urges before they escalate, getting confidence boosts when motivation dips, staying accountable to your plan, and navigating high-risk moments (weekends, evenings, stress, social situations). They're also there for emotional support when things feel overwhelming. You can message me anytime you're wobbling, even between scheduled check-ins (within reason, and I'll answer as soon as I can). They're brief and action-focused, not long therapy conversations. This is not an emergency service, so if you're in crisis, please contact 999 (UK), A&E, Samaritans (116 123), NHS 111 (option 2), or the appropriate emergency number in your country or region.
You apply first, then I review your application and arrange a 10–15 minute introductory call. If it's a good match, you agree the programme structure, check-in days, and start date together. Sessions are typically front-loaded (2 per week at the start, then 1 per week), with set check-in days and clear boundaries. You'll get both practical tools and emotional support from day one.
The programme is for people who are ready to commit to structured, accountable support, and who want both practical strategies and someone genuinely in their corner emotionally. It works best if you're motivated to change, can engage consistently over the programme period, and want more than a single session. It's not suitable for people in active crisis or requiring medical detox. In an emergency, please contact your local emergency services — call 999 in the UK, or the appropriate number in your country or region.
Yes. Sober companion support is built into the Premium Coaching programmes as online, structured accountability: planned check-ins, support through high-risk moments (weekends, events, travel, stress), and practical tools for cravings and triggers — alongside a clear plan for the weeks ahead. This isn’t a crisis or emergency service.
I will contact you as quickly as possible, within 24 hours at the longest, and we can discuss your needs. You’ll get an email confirmation much sooner. It’s just a conversation — no labels, no pressure, no commitment. We decide together whether coaching is the right fit.
Yes. If you want to continue beyond your initial programme, that's absolutely possible. You and I can discuss extension options at any point.
No. This is not an emergency or crisis service. If you are in immediate danger or need urgent medical help, please contact your local emergency services. In the UK: call 999, go to A&E, contact the Samaritans on 116 123, or call the NHS helpline on 111 (option 2 for mental health crisis). Outside the UK: please contact your local emergency services or the appropriate crisis helpline in your country or region.
Absolutely. Sessions are one-to-one, confidential, and delivered online so you can get support from the privacy of your own home. I follow the Addiction Professionals code of ethics, working with clear boundaries, confidentiality, informed consent, and your wellbeing at the centre of everything.
Yes. All sessions are online via Zoom or Google Meet, so I work with clients across the UK and worldwide. If you're in a different time zone, mention it in your application and I'll arrange a time that works for you.

Completely. Most people who reach out aren't certain, and you don't need to be. If something feels off, that's enough of a reason to talk. The application is just a starting point, no labels, no pressure, no commitment beyond a short conversation.
Yes, and this is exactly the situation coaching is designed for. Willpower alone rarely works because it doesn't address the underlying triggers and patterns. Together we build practical tools, identify what's driving the behaviour, and create a plan that fits your actual life.
No. You can start wherever you are, whether you're still using, trying to cut back, or already in recovery and feeling stuck. There's no requirement to have already made a decision. That's what the coaching is for.
Absolutely. Everything discussed in sessions stays between us. Sessions are one-to-one, online, and completely private, you can get support from your own home without anyone knowing. Andy follows the Addiction Professionals code of ethics.
Therapy tends to explore the past, root causes, trauma, diagnosis. Coaching is forward-looking and action-oriented. We focus on where you want to go and how to get there: building routines, managing triggers, developing coping tools. Many people do both, they complement each other well.
